Bearing Idea

Has anyone tried this type of bearing setup? If so what were the results.

I haven't tried anything like this myself, but it will work ok with light loads.

Heavy loading will cause the edges of the bearings to eventually start digging a groove into each side of the angle and a gap will result that causes looseness in the bearing/rail system. Steel angle rails will resist doing that longer than aluminum rails. The bearing diameter will need to be large enough to provide some clearance to the nut that separates the bearings.

The most common method uses the bearings mounted at 90 degrees to the flat sides of the right angle rails for good reasons. This places a flat bearing surface against a flat surface on the rails for maximum load bearing capability and minimum wear on the rails.

Buy me a Beer?

I tested the idea using skate bearings ,but i cant for the life of me remember why i hadn't gone forward with it ,i think it was due to the side to side slop in the bearings , what worked well was when i bolted the bearings to angle iron which allowed the bearings to come in full contact with the square tubing (like a V ), it was dead solid and slid nicely , then i scraped it and went with v groove bearings instead (less parts) which ride the corners of the square tubing
i really like the idea of running on square stock like that , once everything is set properly in place it is solid and simple , my 10 yr old son and i are building a table for him to play with ,after the sucess i had with mine it was a no brainer that its the only way to go with his , this time its homemade v bearings

I have tryed a few v wheels on the lathe using a 45 deg carbide insert bit, but I can not get a very nice finish on the sides of the groove. What kind of RPM and feed speed did you use for yours?

i think it was around 700 rpm on a manual , i made them from aluminum which is good enough for what they are going to do
i posted them here http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72721

Yep, once you go square, you never go back.

Buy me a Beer?

kind of reminds me of a setup i experimented with where i built a steel cage with bearings coming from every which way and it ran on a large chuck of aluminum channel , for the amount of different ideas i tryed its a wonder i ever finished

That, is where I'm at. Half way through a build and I keep wanting to try different things. I was this close to building a new gantry tomorrow but now I'm thinking I'll stick with what I have and just improve later. I just have too much to learn than to just redesign everytime I have a bright idea.

It's kind of a catch 22. I enjoy the design process and finding solutions so much, I could just keep reinventing the wheel on it over and over. I know I've designed at least 20 different z axis. I haven't built one yet.

its progression toward success and satisfaction
the design stage is probably the most fun of it all

I was using SA333 steel and about 490RPM but it wasnt cutting very nice. I might just try my first idea because it would be easy to upgrade it to Vgroove if need be

I kinda tried something like that - but I was trying on round pipe... almost worked but I gave it up for my latest bearing too - here's a list of all my "rejected" ideas if you're interested
