Disable feature on Geckodrives

Does anyone use the 'disable' feature as an E-Stop? Sounds like it makes sense to me, any ideas?

Is this feature typically reserved for something else?

I'm just using a basic optoisolated breakout board.

It is my opinion that the E-Stop should kill the power to the drive. Not just disable it.

I use it in conjunction with the rest of the process of cutting power. I also use it when one drive faults for whatever reason to kill the whole process.

Two methods are better than one.

Bubba,

Like you, I have my G251's wired to the E-Stop plus a SPST switch hooked in series to disable any one, or more, drive(s). In this way, I can test an axis, etc, without moving all of the stepper motors while tuning or adjusting the stepper motor that I need to work on.

If I am wrong about this, someone please correct me. If you use the disable feature, it kills the power to the motor(s). If the machine is in motion, it will coast to a stop. If the E-stop switch is wired to a pin that is assigned as E-stop in Mach, step and direction pulses will stop being sent and the hold current applied to the motor(s) will act as a brake to stop the motion.
