Motor voltage issues

Im gathering parts to turn my Central Machinery Mill in to CNC. Below is the spects of the driver
4 Axis BIPOLAR Stepper Motor PWM Control
Resolution FULL 1/2 1/4 1/8 Step Mode Individual Axis Selectable
2.5AMP Per Axis with Adjustable Onboard Motor Current
Power Requirement - Min.8vdc to Max 32vdc
Use 4 ,6 or 8 Wire Nema Motor Bipolar or Unipolar
Heat Sinks Provided for All Driver ICs and Power Transistor
PFD AutoTune Feature
Integrated DB25 Breakout
OPTO-Isolated, Motor Driver IC
SMT Components
Dedicated Hardware e-stop / limit screw terminal inputs and outputs


I have 4 motors spects below
powermax II 1.8 step motor
mod.M22Nsxb-JDS-ns-02
Is(dc);2.3 A Bipolar series Vs(dc) 65V
Po 104 W T:90 C max
1500 RPM ambient:40 C
They are 1/4" shafts

The Drive voltage is only rated at 35 Vdc Max. Can i run these motor at that low a voltage ( say 24Vdc) and stay within the current rating of the driver board.

I will also be changing the axis lead screws to ball screw shafts to reudce drag ont the axis.

Yes... the 65v quoted on the motor specs is the maximum voltage recommended on the winding... its is not the coil voltage rating. The M22-NXSB-J spec, page 8 shows the motor is rated at 2.3A bipolar series, 4.6A bipolar parallel so with this driver you will have to run it wired series (which gives a motor min operating voltage of 2.3 * 1.52 = 3.5V). In this mode it will give 1.8Nm (253oz-in) of torque. 24v will work fine but for better performance you could go higher (to 60v if the driver was up to it) but as these are relatively high inductance motors you should back off from the 32v maximum of the driver so I'd not go higher than 28v with that driver.

Anyone know can i replace the M22NSXB-JDS-NS-02 with M22NSLB-JDS-NS-02? Any difference between this 2 models?

If you run that board above 27 Volts it will probably fail somewhere in the future, 3977 chips absolutely won't take more than 35V and when you allow for motor bemf....run it at 24vdc and never spin an unpowered motor with a drill or other such motor when hooked to the driver.
