Question Basic Power Question

Hi Folks:

I am looking to power 3 Heavy Duty Brush type Servo motors that have a spec. of 60VDC @46Amps Max and 48VDC@20Amps operating. I have the opportunity to buy a power supply that puts out 48VDC @50Amps. My question is will this PSU toast my motors ? Is there a way of using this PSU and limiting the current somehow ??

Thanks

Buy me a Beer?

The power supply only supplies the current demanded of it, IOW it is better to be high on the current rating than on the low side.
Also your drives normally should have the capability of Current limit which also protects the motors.

Thumbs up

Al:

Thanks a bunch for your guidance on this....I had a feeling about the current consumption characteristics....just couldn't remember the Grade 11 Physics? The PSU that I am looking at buying, is actually 2 - 24VDC@25Amps and I was considering connecting them in Series to make up the 48@50Amps...is this Kosher? Also, when considering Brushed Servo motors, does it matter if the PSU's are Regulated or Unregulated ??

Thanks Again Al

Cheers

Series will only increase the voltage to 48V the current capacity will remain the same (25a).
Parallel, the voltage remains at 24v, the current capacity will double.
It is not necessary to have regulated power supplies for servo applications.

Thanks Again. I guess I will keep looking for a PSU. I'm on a more refined track now :-)
