I'd like to buy/build a 5 axis CNC mill or router. Pardon the broad noobie question, but what does everyone out there think is the optimum speed for carving wood? I don't plan on having a large scale machine for cabinet making; I'd like to get into making small toys. I really like the minitech.com mills, but is a machine that small capable of handling a woodworking trim-type router like the Bosch Colt? (if that's even what I really need) Or am I barking up the completely wrong tree here? |

| There is no specific speed for a given material. Optimal cutting RPM and feed rate depends on the shape and design of the cutter you are using and the material. You will eventually learn what gives you the best cutting results and least broken cutters. Feed and speed charts can be found but they are only general guidelines. You'll need to find some dimensions for that machine to see how big it really is. Photos can be deceiving if there is no recognizable reference object in the photo. CarveOne
