Maybe I'll do some experiments during my next build.
The shim stock I have is .006 in thick. Without shimming, the top and bottom pieces were out of parallel by about 1/32 in. And the diagonal was off by a shy 1/32. I used one piece of shim on each side and this pulled it in perfectly.

So, I wouldn't recommend trying to modify those brackets and gussets using a chop saw unless you can shave a few thou per pass. Shimming is just way easier.

I haven't been all that involved with my machine this Winter... but I did just complete another one of my most popular 'gift' plaques. This one is 20" tall by 19" wide MDF... finished in Sculpt Nouveau metallic bronze and brass paints. I like these metallic finishes a lot. The results really look like cast metal.

Man that really looks great. How did yo go about getting the two toned Finnish? Did you apply the red afterwards with a brush?

Yeah... the letter colorations are watercolors put on rather randomly after the Sculpt Nouveau is dry. It's supposed to mimic the hues some metals take on from the high temps. A satin clear coat seals all...

I live in central Oregon... on rural acreage properties where the demographics lean toward the retired. Quite a few of the folks play cribbage AND they also LOVE their DUCKS... so I felt it time to give a board design a shot... here's a v-carve Preview graphic. Not certain just when I'll actually machine it. It kinda demands a nice slab of natural wood VS the MDF I typically work with and that will need to wait until I can get to town with the funds necessary to acquire it...

HaHa... well... I do a bit of Photoshop'ing. The subject image is straight out of the V-Carve side of Aspire ver 3.503... but I put stuff on my faux carbon fiber background with a drop shadow... not all that much manipulation really.

I've decided to get into v-carve inlay and my Oregon Ducks PAC 12 Championship cribbage board design was chosen for a first foray. Since wood has gotten so expensive... especially the exotics... I began to play with PhotoShop to create photorealistic previews so that I can build multiple versions using a myriad of combinations of wood specie and grain to find the most pleasing... and at zero cost.

AGAIN... this is NOT an actual inlay... this is my PhotoShop preview of what I intend to carve!

I have read this thread until my eyes have bled. When I seen that you chose 8020 it drew me in. You have a mighty fine machine. Congratulations on the excellent build. I myself am in possession of quite a bit of discarded 8020 (stuff thrown away at work) and am planning on doing a machine in the near future. Thank you for the inspiration. Also your art work rocks
