Hey guys, I'm new to this so bear with me please. I got interested in CNC and wanted to clone a project that I saw called Hektor (http://www.hektor.ch/), but I also want to make a CNC table first so I can build the parts I need AND whatever else I wanted. So I got a "3-Axis ProboStep Stepper Motor Driver Kit" from Probotix (http://www.probotix.com/3_axis_stepp...or_driver_kit/). It was easy to order and got here on Friday!!! I used the probotix website to put it together as best as i could figure out, but when I had the power on and was setting up Mach 5, I noticed that the motor driver board (http://www.probotix.com/stepper_moto...ers/ProboStep/) was getting hot. I thought it might just be that I didn't have Mach5 set up yet (my motor was making a highpitched wineing noise). so once I was sure that mach 5 was set up correctly I pluged everything back in and was able to move the motor with my arrow keys.. but then my driver started smoking and no longer works ..Please help, I have my boards hooked up like this diagram (http://www.probotix.com/diagrams/3-a...wiring_dia.jpg) except I have no fuses yet (couldn't source them locally, but intend to include them in my final wireing) no Estop or Limit switches yet (had the switches turned off in Mach5 and the estop configures to think it everything is A OK). AND only the Z axis connected (thank God I did not blow them all) The stepper I set up using the documents on their site.. 280 Oz In. Hybrid - http://www.probotix.com/index.php?vi...&product_id=51 The PDF on this page shows the pinout to be: A+ Red Ca Yel/Blu A- Blk B+ Wht Cb Org/Brn B- Grn - http://www.probotix.com/stepper_moto...ers/ProboStep/ The Dip switches were initially set to Sleep, I changed it to Sixteenth Step The connection to the stepper didn't match up with my wire colors on mine, so I examained the driver board and found some markings, thay read left to right, left being the side with the VREF Test Pins A+, A-, CON somthing, CON somting, B-, B+ So from my motor data sheet I hooked up the motor like so; Blk, Red, Yel/Blu, Org/Brn, White, Green ?I now realize that my A+/B+ and A-/B- were reversed, but that would only make the motors move backwards right??? And the breakout board I got is the "PBX-RF RF Isolated CNC Breakout Board" Its manual (http://www.probotix.com/breakout_boa...reakout_board/) There are 6 jumpers on the board and I had mine set like so... JP1 X Axis Power -Off JP2 Y Axis Power -Off JP3 Z Axis Power -ON JP4 A Axis Power -Off JP5 Input Pull-ups -ON JP6 Voltage Regulator Isolation -ON After the smoke, I noticed that Figure 2 in the manual shows all of these jumpers set to Off My Questions are... 1.) Do I have my Stepper hooked up to my Stepper driver correctly? A+ Red A- Blk Ca Yel/Blu Cb Org/Brn B- Grn B+ Wht 2.) What should I set my dip switches to for the initial set up and when I am milling? Full Step (Mode 8 Fixed) Full Step (Mode F Fixed) Half Step Half Step (Mode F Fixed) Quarter Step Eighth Step Sixteenth Step Sleep 3.) How should I set the Jumpers on the Breakout board if I have a setup like this (http://www.probotix.com/diagrams/3-a...ring_dia.jpg)? JP1 X Axis Power Off JP2 Y Axis Power Off JP3 Z Axis Power ON JP4 A Axis Power Off JP5 Input Pull-ups ON JP6 Voltage Regulator Isolation ON 4.) What did I do wrong? I see in the Stepper driver manual to check the VREF voltage to check the current and that I should use a fan at over 1.5 amps, I didn't get to check this before I blew the board, was my wireing ok and I just had the current to high without a heatsink and fan? 5.) Who else has this kit and how did they set up the Jumpers and how much current to you run? Thanks in advance for your patience and help, And thanks for this great site!!! Haro |

| Haro, The ProboStep documentation is currently being updated. Here are a few documentation items we are working on... http://www.probotix.com/manuals/ProboStepVX.pdf http://www.probotix.com/manuals/ProboStep/ I have updated the PDF with a wiring diagram for the yellow motors. Do not worry. We will help you with your broken boards. Contact Chris through the website contact form to arrange an RMA. We are here to help you get your project going. >Len |

| Sweeet, thanks Len From the PDF I see that I should wire the stepper driver as Red, Blk, Yel/Blu, Org/Brn, Wht, Grn And that I should have used a Heat Sink, I like what you have and will try that out. Thanks for quick responce, A++ for Probotix.com, Quick Shipping, Cheap Prices!! |

| Sorry for digging up an old post, but a similar thing happen to me... Just got my Fireball v90, and was testing it with EMC2. Today I tried out Mach 3, and with better results. I was jogging my axis around checking for binding, when I noticed a highpitched wineing noise coming from my Z-axis. I put my hand on the stepper checking for heat, and peeked at my drive boards. Smoke was coming off the Z-axis board... I pulled the mains, and called quits for the day. My setup is as follows: 3x 200oz/inch 6 lead steppers (blue) 3x ProboStep Stepper Motor Driver (rev3) PBX-2 CNC Parallel Port Breakout Board (rev3) Just sendt off a email too Probotix, guess I'll have to order a new stepper driveboard. | Definitely at least get an e-mail query off to them - I had some issues when I was first setting up my router just recently, and Chris and Len were very helpful. They replaced some parts that had fried and provided a lot of useful information on what to check and how to make certain the settings were all correct. http://www.probotix.com/contact_probotix/ Since then, it's all been working great (except for not having enough time to really use the router, much...) |
