What would be the cheapest / simplest option for a machine to carve violin backs and scrolls?
Has anyone had any experience with this?

What do you mean? software or building a machine? If your building a machine go to joes 4x4 and take a look at that. software you can get alibre for free to do a cad drawing and then you would need a cam program to generate the gcode . Cambam is cheap and so is cut3d to do any 3d carvings. If you need to model any 3d things try silo or Moi, moi is like rhino cad sort of. a nurbs modeler . all together your looking at a few grand but if things work out for you you can make that back fast. I am a violin maker. I am building what I hope will be a carving machine
to cut out the outside surfaces of a front or back. NOT cnc based but
will be automated ( fire and forget !)
I am in the middle of building it so I don't really know if it will work untill
I get it done and try it !

I wanted to stay away from the massive complication involved with a
cnc type setup. It will be a duplicator type machine. If it works I will
just put in the raw material, put in the piece to be copyed and hit the on switch. About 1 hour or so later it cuts off and it's done. You can be doing
other work while its working. It will not have all the long springy and flexible
arms invilved with commercial duplicators which seem really bad for the
precision of duplication.
It won't work for scrolls though. Just plates ( IF it works of coarse ! )

Here is a photo of the duplicator that I built. I am thinking of converting to cnc to speed up the process.
