I might go with a pulley system for my gantry, and I was looking into timing belts.

What is a good tension to use? Should you use a tool to measure it, or can you just feel if it's right?

ya im also going to be looking for some belts here soon.

What type of belt is best when dealing with eliminating backlash?

looking at sdp-si. would kevlar be the best? also would urethane or polyurethane be better?

The tooth profile has a lot more to do with backlash than the belt material. SDP-SI has a lot of good technical info on belts, and will send you free catalogs as well. According to their documentation, the GT2 belts have the least amount of backlash.
