A mill spindle typically is slower but will handle heavier cutting tasks without deflection which makes it better for metal machining. I have used my bridgeport type mill for routing wood and it works ok. You just tend to chew up the grain more because of the slower spindle speed. My top spindle speed is 4200rpm. I recently bought a 60,000 rpm air spindle but i haven't tried it yet.

A router runs 4 to 8 times faster than most mills which is great for clean edged cuts and contouring but most routers lack the rigidity for heavy metal cutting. The top end traverse speeds on a router able are usually much faster than a mill as well which (due to gearing/ reduction) sometimes translates to decreased resolution. Most routers usually have much larger work areas than mills as well. I would think if your router design was vibration free and had sufficient accuracy it could be used as a high speed grinder for second operations on metal parts to a certain degree anyway.

Hope that helps a little..

help

Thanks for helping but I need some more advice I am thinking of buying cause a cnc router rather than making one - I don't have the time to build one, do you know of any good cnc router, I would need it to:

1. Must cut 3d
2. must be accurate
3.cnc cutting area around 60 cm by 45 cm
4. My budget is £1200 ($2400)

I would like to buy one but I would pay to have someone build one for me.
And by the way can I use a cnc from the U.S in the U.K.
