gear pitch for racks

question if you have a 20 pitch gear, your cant use a 24 Diametral Pitch spur gear to mesh with it? i understand pitch have to be the same, just trying to under Diametral Pitch, just cant find the right combo of spur ie 20pitch with 20 Diametral Pitch with 20 teeth and 64 teeth for a grear box?
