I would like to build a CNC router and have looked at several designs and read many of the threads regarding DIY machines (Solsylva, Joe's 2006, Pilot Pro). Whatever machine I choose will be built and used in my garage (I live in Utah outside of Salt Lake City). The garage has no heat or cooling. It's relatively dry here, but there would be huge temperature swings. After investing the time and money to build one I would want it to last and keep it's tolerance. So what would you use, wood or metal? Thanks, Steve |

| I'd recommend using steel, provided that you have the skills and tools available to weld, and or machine. From a strength and resistance to distorsion/time standpoint steel would be my choice. I'd not be too concerned with the temperature swings, as long as the temperature doesn't radically change during machining. Depends on what you are building...precision cabinets, or hobby stuff. regards |
