| Take a 5" or 6" wide strip of Partical Board. Bang it on the edge of a metal garbage can and it will break. MDF won't break, it will just hurt your arm. ![]() MDF is stronger, heavier, and a little more stable. But, it splits easier when screwing into the edges. (just a little easier) MDF costs a little more.

| One thing I've never seen anyone here use is plastic laminate (Formica, Wilsonart...). By gluing laminate to both sides of MDF, you greatly increase the strength of the MDF. A laminated piece of 1/2" MDF is probably twice as stiff as a plain piece of 3/4" MDF, and will weigh a little less.

| MDF = Medium density fiberboard. Particle board consists of small sand-sized wood chips whereas MDF consists of fibers and has a much finer texture. Qualify your question with a bit more detail on why you're trying to choose between the two and a better answer can be provided. |
