tool holder alternatives?

what are my options for using some sort of tool holder with a porter cable router.

i've searched around and can't find much.

has anyone come up with a low cost solution here?

i'd like to avoid setting cutter heights over and over again

well after looking around on the forums a little bit, i noticed the quickrout holders.

ran down to the local sears hardware and picked up a set.

but in the end i'm pretty disappointed. as others have said, these types of things don't work at high rpm. (over 10k).

when my router spun up to 23k the hole thing started shaking ,etc.

so back to the drawing board.

How bout collars on your cutting tools? I use them on my mill and it works great for repeatability in depth. Mind you, the mill's max rpm is 6000, not 23k, but if they are made correctly and fit the tool accurately, they shouldn't vibrate.

I'd say most of the collet holders for routers don't crimp down the same making stop collers not really the right thing to find the depth.

I got a quickrout adapter that was made spacificly for adapting to my portercable router (rather then the ones that need a shaft made up) and it does perform well enough for me. Ya it does have a little more run out but works good for me anyway. You have to make sure you twist the holder down to make sure it's tight. No way I would ever say swtching bits as a 1 handed operation like they advertise.

I wish they had 1/4" holders setup the same way as the 1/2 as the set screws do/will back out as well.

Only other soloution would be the Hitech systems or something but last I knew he didn't have another batch done. Computers down so don't can't find the web address.

Do you have a link to where to get the porter cable specific quickrout?

i'm looking into doing exactly what you said, but if someone already sells it then it saves me the grief

yeah i agree - the 1/2 inch design is nicer than the 1/4

so can you run at full rpm with your setup?
