I bought a set of used 12" long 3/4" rails with 2 per rail SPB-12-ADJ Thomson Super Pillow Blocks, intending to use them for a z axis for a manual xyz router woodworking joint cutting machine, similar to the JDS Multirouter, or woodworkers Supply Matchmaker, but with a much longer x axis. No CNC here, the machine works with manually set stops, and by using a template follower. The z axis for this type of machine holds a router horizontally, as required to cut tenons in the ends of long workpieces, and cut true through dovetails. The bearings have some play in them. Will they work anyway, or should these type of bearings be without play? And second, the bushings in these can be replaced, right? Best source for replacements? Also, I acquired a used x-y table made with THK liner rails and carts. Are these THK rails suitable for use in a woodworking environment, where lots of wood dust is constantly being produced? They will be largely shielded by the work table itself, but I don't want to put a lot of work into building a machine that will gum up after a few hours of use. I'm a one man shop, so these will be used only about two to five hours a week on the average. Thanks! Al Ladd. see my work at www.alladd.com Last edited by endgrainguy; 10-17-2007 at 09:55 PM. | vbx bearings are a good source for replacement bearings or just about any local bearing supplier can order them. They shouldnt have alot of play in them if they are in good shape.as far as using them for woodworking ,you can always purchase or make your own wipers of some sort to attach to the ends of the bearings.Just oil the rails lightly and regularly.the thk rails and carts(the profiled ones I presume)are excellent for that use. |

| The bearings will have play until you pair two up on the same rail and tie them together... to test put the bearings on the rail and turn it over so the bearings are resting on the ground, slide the rail... you should feel no play at all. Alone the bearings will have some play.
