Free JGRO anyone?

I've finally finished using my JGRO machine to build machine number 2 - a Joe's CNC so it's been disassembled and unfortunately has to go.

I thought about putting it on eBay but instead will offer it here to anyone who is able to come and pick it up from Worthing, West Sussex, England. First come, first served!

A little bit about the machine: It's not the most finely built JGRO but does work fairly well. It could do with a bit of modification and adjustment to tighten it all up and make it a bit more rigid but, having said that, it was quite capable and accurate at cutting all the parts for the Joe's CNC. I've had to raid the stepper motors, router and router mount so you'll have to provide your own.

I've attached a couple of photos and you can see a video of it cutting some MDF motor mounts at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD1pGmhHhDI

Hi

If you haven't changed your mind, I'd like to take you up on your (very) generous offer, if I may!

Been looking at some of the posts here for a while, and have been amazed at some of the stuff you all do, and I'd like to have a go myself, but have been a bit daunted by the first step.

Let me know if I'm accepted!

Splodger, DRP,

Sorry to keep you both hanging on but I wanted to give other people a chance to respond.

I now have a problem - only one spare machine but two applicants. I think the only fair thing to do is flip a coin so here goes.

And the winner is... DRP!

Sorry Splodger. I wish I had another one to give away but I'm not giving away my nice new machine! All I can say is keep reading the forum posts and have a go at building your own. The JGRO is definitely a good machine to start with and is not difficult to build.

DRP - I'll PM you to make arrangements for collection.

Oh well, never been lucky, but thanks anyway and congrats to DRP!

I'll have to have a stab at it myself. Sooner or later.

Hello,

given that you are in the uk could you please list where you got each part to build the machine you are giving away and what the cost was?

thanks

Many thanks RDHOPKINS the offer is very much appreciated. Although it came down to a coin, either way its an extremely descent thing to do.

I have been struggling for weeks to get started and this will hopefully get me going at last. I’m straight down the workshop to clear a space.

Thanks splodger and commiserations, I must have done something right for once ;-)

Drp,
Now you can get it setup and if the mood were to strike, help splodger cut parts for his first machine(what a way to break in your new machine)

Just my suggestion, I know if I had someone locally who would give me a helping hand I would be there, with coffee, tea or whatever...

I actually just purchased an x2 mill to convert to cnc so that I can make the parts that I need for my cnc router.

Stephen

Hi Stephen
Yes of course I would be more then happy to do that for anyone (in spirit). One small problem with me just at the moment though is that I am an absolute novice (not really the best person to be entrusting anything important with). Splodger and I also seem to be a considerable distance apart I am based West London so not sure how practical it would be on this occasion for either of us. However once competent I would gladly oblige.

My interest with CNC is associated to model aircraft and I co partner a UK forum. I would like to produce some simple (finish-able) balsa kits to try and bring back (encourage) some basic building skills which have been all but lost to plastic and foam. Not new by any means but I was stunned by how many people were afraid to glue 2 bits of wood together, what are they missing?

Rdhopkins, do you have a build thread for your new Joe2006? How did you cut all those long parts with your JGRO?

UK parts supplies

Freddean2006: Apart from the MDF, most of the parts I used came from eBay. I wouldn't know where to start looking if it wasn't for eBay!

A quick breakdown:
MDF: B&Q and a local timber supplier. I did buy some MDF from Homebase but the quality was not as good. It tended to split much easier and leave "furry" edges where cut. B&Q MDF on the other hand was fairly cheap and very good quality.

Aluminium angle: eBay. I could not find a cheap supplier for this but luckily did not need too much. Cost about £20 for the amount required for the JGRO machine.

Pipes: eBay again! I found a very good supplier of 25mm pipe with about 5mm wall. This is not as large as the JGRO plans call for but seems adequate. Total cost about £25 with some left over.

Bearings, stepper motors, drivers and power supply: All eBay. I got some very good deals, particularly with the power supply - 24v 10A analogue supply for £15!

Leadscrews: I used standard M12 threaded rod that came from an engineering supply company (bought through a family member who did not tell me how much they cost!).

I did not keep a tally of the total cost. I could probably sit down and work it out though.
