Screws or gears

It's come to my atintioun that a good screw costs. ALOT!

But Threded bar is rather cheep.
Even michene quality.

I was wondering why no one has thought of building somthing using this kind of configuration

Example picture Below.

I'll post a better example as soon as i get more refinement into the cog.

I think you will find that this method that you describe is called Rack and pinion drive.
There are machines even on this forum that are driven this way.

Nice drawling though :0)

Well put me in a pink skirt and call me susy... I did not know that.
Thanks for the complement
I did the anamation in 3dsMax
I just wish i could do half as good in autocad. :/ darn thing is hard to figure out.

Rack and pinion A. hmm
Could some one post a pic of this... so i can SEE an example of the Gearing.
As in a pic of the gear drive train and gear mating.
That way i can start designing this in?

Oh and you might think getting teeth to line up in a 3d modling pacige is easy... it's not
man i'm out of practis....
That little drawing took me 15 minuts to remember how to get that cog shape right.

Here is a scaled and proper render of that asimbly.

I've got to rig it and im not rigging it till i get some more of the thing modeld.
Note
Extream closeup.
this is a 5cm thick cog with a raideos of about 12cm

Isn't it harder to minimize backlash with a rack and pinion?

Rack and spur gears are a very good way of motion control for machines that don’t require accuracies greater than +/- .002.

Rhino isn’t a high end rendering tool but it makes quick work of 3D models of gears.

Nice idea, Is there a formula for figuring speed of travel and torque output using a given motor size and torque so you can get the correct gear size for your motor? How do you minimize backlash in them? I see McMaster-Carr has them fairly inexpensive.
