Need to locate some things.....

I have recently purchesed a DIY CNC router...I'm planing on using a trim router to cut G10 type material...I was looking for a 3 jaw chuck to fit in a 1/4" collet or some kind of an adapter to make it work so I can use normal drill bits and end mills.

I'll be using Hitachi router, which uses collets. Comes with 1/4" and 1/2". I dont see why it would hold drill bits in there?.?.?

Look at it this way if router spindles where designed for using standard drill bit and end mills there would already be a product out there.

I think the clue is in the router spindles speed range.

mine goes down to 8k and up to 24k, dont really see a problem(maybe for drilling with big bits with slow plunge speed???). Keep in mind than i'm not real woodworker, or machinist or anything else

The CNC table I have was designed for a rotozip type tool. For what I want to cut I would really like the freedom to use drill bits and end mills with with diff. shank sizes. the trim routers I've been looking at all have 1/4in collets. I know I can find drill bits and end mils with 1/4 in shanks. it would just be nice to be able to just grab any drill bit or end mill and stick it in a chuck. I found places that have 3 jaw chucks with 1/2in staight shanks and that would fit perfect in a full size router, but I don't think my table and motors could take the weight of a full size...

Danger

The speed of the spindle will be the danger... the 3 jaw chuck will be large enough and most likely out of balance enough that it will at very least bend the 1/4 " shank stuck in the router and most likely break and send the chuck flying at great velocity and inertia in a random direction.

Voice of experience.

Steve thanks for your concern...I have a speed control for the trim router so I can slow i down to a min. of 600 RPM and it has an upper limit in the 25K range...it's a homemade trim router I found online....
