| Yes they are similar and English is a difficult language. Routing is normally refering to the use of a router and is cutting a trench or full thickness of the material. Engraving is normally on the surface and is often using a low powered spindle. Common engravings are pictures or letters. Carving is a 3 dimentional process. can refer to deep cut lettering. Lathing is a rotational process, and normally used to produce objects such as a pully or shaft. |

| You need a router or engraver. A router will do larger heavier items like Pic.2 below, and can do some engraving with a small collet and the correct bits. An engraver will also engrave as in Pic.1 below. I don't know why anyone would want a machine built solely for engraving instead of a router that can do both, although I think there are 'engravers' used in the jewellery industry. Maybe they are just small routers more suited to fine intricate work..... |
