the thing about these steppers is the idea that 35$ + gecko 114 +shipping is probably like 160-170/axis. for roughlythe same price, i can get those clifton servos, encoders, and geckos! SO its a tossup still... if i use my currently planned rack and pinion design, I think steppers may be better, as they will need lower rpm to drive the gantry at 200 or so IPM.
anyone know about using friction belts to drive a pinion on a rack with a servo? is the holding torque good enough? when milling there seems to be a fair amount of time any given axis sits holding.
this is roughly the design i am attempting to build. im using NSK\THK Rails, rack and pinion gearing, so hopefully it will have a less bulky gantry.. i dunno. im trying to keep the cost around 2k. heres a link to the developer of this machine. they make neat stuff. http://www.cyber-nc.com/4axis.htm
