Hello all, Finally got sick of burning out routers, although they were only $50 each, three burn outs was starting to add up. The other problem was the noise, running a screaming router for 12 hrs at a time was wearing thin with all at home. After the last burnout I set about making up a new longer lasting arrangement with the main priority being cost. The motor is out of my old extraction fan, the pulleys and back plate were knocked up in the foundry, the spindle body was made up from some RHS I had lying around. I re-used one of the burnt out router spindles so I didn’t have to make up a collet. I cut the spindle in half and press fitted on a shaft extension. The torque arm is a 50-cent turnbuckle and the motor pivot is a butt hinge. As can be seen it’s a three-speed arrangement with a top speed of around 14,000RPM. I’ve had it running for 8 hrs with no problems so far. It’s heaps quieter and doesn’t stall out on high feed rates. The only thing left is to make up a guard. |

| G,Day Greg, Used the bottom half of the router as you mentioned, and yes replaced the bearing. The top half has had a shaft extension added to the original router spindle after machining away the motors rotor. A much larger bearing at the top is used to carry the radial loads generated due to the pulley action. Cam |

| That is sweet. Nothing like the sound of an induction motor vs the others. Going for quiet that is the motor ya need. Like using my Jet shaper vs a table mounted router. no contest which is more quiet.. Hmmm that gets me thinking. the spindle assembly in my shaper, Has a shaft, support bearings, collet and pullie on the other end going to the induction motor.. Hmmm Wonder how much that assembly cost alone vs the entire shaper... Might have a ready made collet in that. How ever I think the max speed of my shaper spindle is rated ~11,000 rpm? How much HP does that induction motor you are using have? (wondering about added gantry weight of something like this now.. Hmmmm b. |
