Hi - I am almost done with my Z-Axis on my DIY router. Looking at a porter cable router. It does not have any way to adjust the speed. Any ideas on if I wanted to slow the speed down? Thanks

| Hi, If you do not have variable speed you will have issues with burning. The only thing you can do is use single flute cutters and keep your feed speeds high. Having said this you are still going to have problems with small circles and small parts as you’re not going to get the cutting speeds due to acceleration and deceleration of your steppers. The only real solution is to bite the bullet and buy a variable speed router. Sorry about the bad news, John

| The good news is that you can buy a Mikita with variable speed and it puts out HALF the noise as the PC routers. I have a big PC and I have to wear hearing protection if in the same room. We had to shout above the scream of the router. Any speed control on a router only gives you about 50 to 100% speed. Below 50% the torque drops off so much it just stalls. In routers with AC brushed motors speed is proportional to voltage but so is torque. An internal control does normally have feedback from the motor so if it starts to bog down will try to add in more volts for more torque. External controls can't get to the place on the motors to get feedback so don't have it. TOM CAUDLE www.CandCNC.com |

| You might want to look at the Hitachi that everyone around here uses. $119 at Lowes, and variable speed too. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...2VC&lpage=none

I will probably get this one. Now just need to figure out how to mount it to my z-axis.

| in the last 2 years that i have been reading the forum,i have learned alot and picked up on some pretty good tips.but nobody has mentioned running there ac brush routers on dc.i run a dewalt router on dc ,runs smooth, quiet, cool, pick a speed, and reduce the carbon arc to nothing.build a dc box plug it in and dial a speed.the dc box will cost about the same as the router.but it will save on earplugs. bill |

| this is what i built.i picked up 1500 watt ac lighting rheostat,600 volt 25 amp bridge rectifier,6 200vdc caps at 2500 ufs and a 15000 drain off resistor, a 110 wall socket, and 110 light switch.i wired it up like this---110 ac to 110 switch --110 switch to rheostat---rheostat to bridge rec---bridge rec to caps and out to wall socket --plug in router and have fun.depending on your rheostat you should make between 28vdc and 190vdc.now don't put the pencil to the rheostat and try to get cheap, and remember when you turn that dial you got 190vdc and 25 amps.that is a lot of push.you can plug in any ac brush motor and it will run it. bill |
