Cheap spindle thought

Has anyone taken apart a router? What kind of bearings are in it? I am wondering if a router could be supplied with a longer spindle shaft, and with a step pulley design, be made to spin different RPMs from low (for metal) to fairly high (obviously not 20,000 still!). Heck...I have an old router- my only one though- maybe I'll take it apart tommorrow and see!

I have an idea to make a spindle that's powered by a router with a 2:1 belt drive reduction. I like to do metal work. I'm afraid my router is not going to last very long subjecting it to metal cutting. Would like a spindle that accepts r-8 collets and has better bearing support then a router.

Hobbiest, I thought you were working on a R8 spindle for your router?

There's a great thread in the metal working section about a spindle someone is designing with a quick change toolholder.

Harbor Freight has one too - been using it - but got a good deal on eBay thru HF. You might check there too, else: www.harborfreight.com - don't know 'bout Grisley

Inventit...what is an R8? Everyone else...the main reason for the thought on a spindle such as this, is not only for a slow RPM, but also for noise reduction. If I could use a motor from a washer or dryer mounted to the back of my homemade mill, then I could have quiet, free cutting!

Has anyone thought about using this router?

As far as I can tell it’s a brand new router. It’s truly “variable speed” from 10k to 23k rpm. It’s suppose to be compatible with the 690, and 890 bases, so I would think it could be mounted like allot of people here do with there 690’s.

Now that this recent college grad has finally got a job I was thinking about using it, on my router project. I would think for people that want to use step down pulleys for a spindle that it would work.

Hobbiest,

An R8 is a non-locking taper. It uses a drawbar to retain either chuck or collets. It is used on mini-mills and other mills as well,
much better than using a plain jacobs taper!

Buy me a Beer?

Has anyone thought about using this router?
I've got a brand new one sitting in the box waiting for me to finish building. I think InventIt has one on his machine, too. I haven't routed with it, I just turned it on, and it seems really nice. Very quiet at 10k rpm. I'm tempted to buy another for general router use, even though I have 2 690's and a 7518.
