Acme Tap

I have an acme lead screw as described below:
Precision Acme Lead Screw 10 Turns/Inch, 3/8" Dia, 1 Start,
6'L, Rh Thread

I believe it measures 3/8-10. I can seem to find a tap for this screw so I can make my own acme nuts out of delrin material. Does anyone know where I can find this tap? Also, is it correct that the tap size is 3/8-10 from the description above?

Thanks,

Why not make your own tap? Do a search on this site and there are instructions for doing this. I have seen it but don't remember where on this site. Ron

Thanks for your help. The tracytools.com do have the 3/8"-10 acme screws. The wttool.com site took too long to load. I will try wttool.com later.

Thanks,

Have you tried www.mscdirect.com , www.use-enco.com and www.mcmaster.com ? Surely mcmaster and MSC will have them.

Why are the taps so expensive?

There are different numbers for different tolerences in the taps. I believe that 1 is the closest tolerence, but don't quote me on that. Just something to keep in mind.

ACME taps are kinda busy in their design. The ones I have used cut in two steps: A roughing cut with the nose of the tap and a a finish cut on the end closest to the tap holder.

The amount of material to be removed has a great deal to do with the tapping force required, so they usually cut in two steps.

Kinda like the difference in cutting a 70 percent engagement tapped hole and a 90 percent thread.

Therein lies the difference in price.
