First off.......the site here is great, very informative and helpful. I'm a member of some other forums on constructing machinery, and would like to say that this forum seems very open to ideas and helping. I have been building machinery the last 6 months for production for snow&skate boards. I am interested in building a cnc to cut the boards out. When you press a board it is in a rectangular shape and needs to be cut to the oval shape and the edges routered with a roundover bit. Since I am really quite new to CNC's I wanted to get some suggestions before I jump into building one. I would like to build one that goes a fairly fast speed. 50-80 inches per minute straight cut through 1/2" wood. Is this unrealistic? I don't have a huge budget, but I am willing to scrape together what I need. How large of a router motor is needed for that speed? Do I need better components to handle that speed? Any advice is appreciated! |

| Hi Youche. I am still building my machine. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19603 But from experience of using routers I would suggest a 1/2" chuck and variable speed. From what other people have built here on the forums speed of upto 90 IPM on a budget are not unreasonable. What is the typical length of surf board as this maybe a problem if you are intending to use cheap 1/2" x 10 ACME thread(6ft lengths from EMCO). You can gain a good education from Joes thread plus he sells the kit for his machine. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15139 Liam |
