I want to build a 48" x 48" router table possibly to use with plasma. I want to drive both sides of Y with 2 425 steppers direct drive to 3/4 x 6 acme. Also a single 425 stepper for X also with acme. Will these steppers be strong enough. I planned on Xylotex 4 stepper motor kit with controller setup. I'll be using linear bearings on X & Y riding on 1 inch round. Does this sound like it will work. Any good input will be appreciated Thanks |

| Just remember that the xylotex is rated at 2.5A 30VDC. I don't know the rating on those motors but if they are greater than 2.5A you will need to look to a bigger drive. If you are going to buy the linear round type bearings try to use the ones that only wrap 3/4 around so you can put a support under the 1" rod. A 48" long rod will flex unless the gantry is really light. For routing you will need a heavier gantry so the flex will be greater. To hit 300 IPM for plasma cutting you need to spin the screw 6 times that speed or 1800 RPM. They probably won't take that. I don't think you can make the xylotex spin the motor that fast anyway. I would guess about 900 rpm tops with the 30 volts so your max cutting speed will be 150 IPM....too slow for the speeds needed for thinner materials. Your designing a pretty good router table but it's too slow for plasma (unless all you cut is 1/8" and up). |

| Are you saying the 425 motors are strong but the Xylotex controller is not adequate to power them through the 48" table at a good speed. Also if the controller is not capable I guess their power supply isn't either. I'm not trying to set speed records........just get them to do a job. The Geko controllers are much more expensive to get four as compared to Xylotex 4 motor controller. What Geko drive with these motors would you suggest? Or is this not a good motor to start with? Xylotex says this combo works fine using their controller and power supply but some of you have a difference of opinion. I'm still confused.Thanks for any help |

The problem with their 425 motors is their high inductance, which will severely limit their speed. They will have more low speed torque (which you shouldn't need for plasma), but the torque will drop quickly with speed. Higher inductance is a consequence of getting high static torque with low current. Up to a point, you can compensate for higher inductance by increasing supply voltage, but the Xylotex voltage rating won't allow higher supply voltages. |
