Stepper motor speed\voltage question?

My question is this,

I have a Jgro machine almost done. I have 200oz steppers installed. Currently I'm using a 12v power supply for the motors. Using Mach2 I now know where my max speed is before missing steps. If I build a 35v power supply for the motors will I be able to increase the speed or will I still be limited with the max steps from Mach2? Just wondering before I spend the money if I will get any more speed or not.

Thanks
Terry

even if you were limited by the number of steps your mach2 will output you will still benefit by the increased torque higher up the rev range the rise in voltage gives you. so up your voltage, the difference between 12v and 24v is enormous.

I was just curious to see if anyone has changed only the voltage and was able to get more speed? I know that increasing the voltage increases the speed. But will the speed realy increase if I'm at the max output for the computer I'm using?

If you are limited by the speed of the computer, then no amount of increased voltage will make the motor go faster. However, with a 12 volt supply, your speed is most likely limited by the power supply.

Are you saying you're using 25,000 steps per second with 12V? Or 35 or 45Khz? With 1/8 microstepping and 200 step/rev motors, 25,000 steps per second can give you roughly 950 rpm. I doub't you're anywhere near that using 12V. And if you do reach the limit of 25,000 steps per second, you can change the settings in Mach to use 35,000 or 45,000 steps per second, provided your PC is fast enough.

Usually, your useable speed increases proportionally as you increase voltage. Double your voltage should double your speed.
