jpeg to vector pictures

Hi Chuck,

Here are the pics (original and the vector result). I tried the same pic in WinTOPO and Aide PDF to DXF and got nothing but glare from the conversion with both programs. Keeping in mind that I'm a violin maker explains the nature of the pics. I still haven't had the results I have been looking for with a human face yet though (I'm reading the ebook "supermodels with Rhino3D" right now, hence the attempt with the human face). If anyone does have luck with the human face please post your settings and method.

The original files were all to big to post so I had to resize them, in the case of the vector I had to reduce it to a jpeg and resize it from there as opposed to posting the original dxf.

Wow, that is very cool! I'm going to check out Algo now. I probably never would have considered this one if it weren't for this forum. (Thanks!)

Did it take long to convert the image to tool paths?

Man, thanks for the links I have tried everything i can think of to do this on the cheap. My only other 2 cents is vector majic will convert bitmaps for a ~$8/month (3 month min) to vectors, then using covertion program to g-code.

already have desk cnc

I am starting to play with 3d carving. I was setting my step overs at the radius of the tool used (1/32 endmill) and getting lines. SHould I be stepping the diameter?

are you using a flat end mill ? an end mill won't work very well , you'd probably get better detail using v bits , even a fine ballnose can lose a lot of fine detail at at times (depending upon the carving) but is quite effective under the right circumstances
usually the tighter the better as far as step over goes , I do a lot of images that are 10x10 or 10x12 and i'll use .01" to .015" step over
