Talking Dremel Mount

Hey guys,

I cut a holder for my dremel tool. There are many times I find I don't need to run the porter cable router due to the material I am cutting and well...noise. The dremel tool is much quiter and I think it might get me by for a lot of the things I like to make (engraved signs, foam airplanes, etc.).

I have to get a top mount still done and will post a dxf if anyone else wants to make one.

Here are some pics:

Dremel Mount 2

You can see the whole making HERE IF YOU LIKE

time for bed!

Nice work Taus. I will have to make one of those for my small JCKleinbauer mill.

Are you serious? Your Dremel is quieter than you router? My P-C router is smooth and does little more than hum when running. My Dremel on the other hand clanks, and bumps, and makes all kinds of disgusting noises. You must be lucky. Or maybe I just have a bad example.

Hey Dave,

Too funny. My dremel is a whisper compared to the porter cable. It hums and is a joy to listen to The main noise out of the porter cable is that fan noise,,,it is SO loud and hurts to listen to at full speed. I think the electronic feedback also makes those motors louder but that is just a thought.

The dremel at full speed is also "pretty loud" but at 8 speed and under it's nothing. I could carry a phone conversation with it 2 feet away. Again at 10 speed it is the fan noise that takes over.

My Dremel in the picture (400 XPR) is MUCH quiter than the, say, Multipro 395 dremel (friend has one) and also the electronic feedback version (brother has one). That one is loud. There is something about that 400 XPR that makes it very quite.

I did open it up and glue the front bearing in the casing to decrease play.
I gave it a test drive and it is very nice on the router. The only other thing quiter is the Sherline motor....that puppy hums!

I could post a movie of the noise if you like.

Nice.. What depth passes did you use with the 1/16" cutter? Looks like it did a nice job.

I cut the aluminum with a 9/64" endmill that I had... 1 mm depth pass around 8 to maybe 10 ipm. I also did some passes at 1.5 mm depth and it did not miss a beat. I did use WD-40 for some of the cutting...it really helped.

For the 1/16" one I cut that around .5 mm depth and one or so at 1 mm (just to try it) and it worked. Past that you could see the bit starting to deflect a little. I flooded it with WD-40 and cleared the chips before the next pass. I think I cut that around 3 or 4 ipm.

After that I filed the edges a little an that was it! I will work on the top support hopefully today and get a dxf out if you want to cut one.

Either that or you got a really good PC router.

i'm planning on making a machine soon -- i'd be interested in the cad file for a dremel mount, as well as one for a porter cable mount too for that matter
