Ebay Spindle/VFD combo's

Hey guys

I have searched through the 100+ pages of info on these spindles but can't seem to find a definite answer to my question.

Will these spindles/vfd's run in reverse so I can do a bit of tapping or use a reverse rotation endmill?

Its possible to reverse at least some types of 3 phase motors but the controller would have to support it. try downloading the manual for a name brand VFD and searching it. Using a VFD motor in reverse is pretty pointless: its lowest usable speed is around 6,000 rpm, which is far to high for tapping.

I'd have to say NO to this one. I mean in my mind taping takes quite a bit of low end torque and really low speeds by comparison to what speeds you woudl run a cutter at..

I set my VFD's up for ~an 8 second spin up and 7-8second breaking to stop sequence.. I'm not sure instant reverse (say what you might do to a bridgeport when tapping) is exactly what you could do with a VFD spindle.

Becides again the gearing of this for the job is just wrong. I mean these are after all direct drive motors..

I have another question for ya. Would you guys buy the combo or would you just buy the spindle then buy a dif VFD separate?

I'd get the Chinese spindle, but the Hitachi x200 VFD

On those combo deals, the Hitachi comes out maybe $25 more than Chinese = great manual, easy programing and Mach3 control, toll free support.

What software are you using?

I'm using TorchMate3 software to run my machine.

If your Torchmate software has Modbus control, you can control the x200 with a 2 wire interface.

Please don't think of me as an idiot I'm just completely new to this and am self teaching. What is Modbus exactly?

I'd have to say get the spindle and get a VFD from automation direct. I really like mine, they have phone support people who will help you will the settings. I've run mine for 5-6 years now and never had to do anything to it after initial setup (other then change the spindle speed)... Easier in my mind to in that you are dealing with 1 company for everythind (cords if you want to make the control screen remote and other stuff) rather then a smaller reseller who sells all brands.
