I bought a Bosch 1HP router from Toolking.com and got it in hand today. It is rated for 110v/60Hz. But in my country I have 220v/50Hz. I bought a big step-down transformer 220v -> 100v (weight is about 7.8kg) and it is rated as follow: Pri-V: 220V Sec-V: 100V Sec-A: 3A Capacity: 600VA Sec-A and Capacity actually makes me confused. As per my understanding, 600VA means 6A at 100V but Sec-A says it is rated for 3A. Someone please shed some lights whether my transformer is sufficient for this 1HP router. Just for your info, I'm running some (small) 110V/60Hz motors at 50Hz and they are working for months without problem.

| What is the model number of the router? I can't say for sure why the numbers on your transformer seem wrong. However a 220->120 transformer that weighs 7.8kg (17 pounds) sounds to me like it is good for 600VA. In use your router will generally draw less than 1hp especiallyif you are not running it at full speed and high loads, so it sounds (at my first guess) that your transformer should be ok. Just be careful to check the temperature of the transformer, as overheating would be a good sign the transformer is not big enough. |

| Three amps on the high voltage side of the transformer would be about 6 amps on the low voltage side. Routers are normally universal motors, which are basically series wound DC motors that have a few added features which let the also run on AC. http://www.ee.lamar.edu/gleb/power/L...al%20motor.pdf So reducing the freqency a bit will not affect the motor however some newer routers may have some electronics in them (speed controls etc.) which may or may not be affected. |

| @Andre' B: The label says Sec-A: 3A and I suppose it's talking about the lower voltage side. I contacted the shop, they says it is a mistake in the labeling. But I personally don't get confidence on their statement. Today I ran the router for five minutes setting the speed knob in full (35k RPM) but without load. Router got some heat at collet side. It is most likely due to high speed rotation. But the transformer is really cool. I don't have an amp meter at this moment so I can't check the current.

| Thanks for the info, yep it does look like some mistake on the transformer label. The Bosch Colt PR20EV is rated at 120v 5.6A (max) on the label, so assuming your transformer is rated or 6A output continuous there should be no problem. Also, the router will only draw about 1/3 of that current at lower speeds and light loads and in most use you would expect it to still be under 2/3 of its maximum (so under 4A). So it looks safe enough, assuming of course that your transformer is capable of 6A output. |
