I am looking to upgrade the spindle on my router. Certainly I am using a bosch router. I plan on cutting 3/4" melamine in one pass. Does anyone know how big of a spindle I would need and where I would be able to buy one. Thank You |

| Depends on your budget, but the cheapest would be a Chinese spindle off ebay. There are several threads here about them. Get a real VFD, not one of the Chinese ones. If you've got more money, you could get a similar unit with a warranty from Keling or a Colombo from Blurry Customs (about $2k for a 3HP). I don't know on the power requirement, but I'd guess at least a 2.2kW. Maybe someone else can comment on that. However the other portion of that recipe is having a machine with enough force from the drive mechanism and a stiff enough machine.

| You are using a Germany machine,In general, many foreign companies not only sell the spindle,If they sell, then the price should be high,I suggest you find this product in your own country,

| Joshv, The comments about ensuring your machine is up to the task is important. What size cutter are you planning to do your 1 pass at 3/4" with? This will influence your spindle requirements. What federate can your machine handle. There are places in Canada you can buy either a industrial spindle or an Asian one. Keling (Chicago) has a Asian one with a warranty. Mine seems to be working well. The VFD also from him is still working fine. Then there is EBay. Many different prices and the quality to go along with it. Dave |

| I'd recommend a 5HP spindle if you want to cut 3/4" in one pass. How fast do you want to cut? And is your machine rigid enough?

| We cut 3/4" Birch ply, pine and oak in a single pass at 100 IPM with a Bosch 1617evs. We use Centurion tools 5/32" bit. It may seem a little slow, however I have a machine I built using parts from CNCrouterParts.com (CNCRP). I couldn't run a 1/4" bit at 3/4" full depth at 100 IPM with reliabilty with the Bosch and the Nema23 setup from CNCRP. I would like to upgrade to a spindle one day once I get the machine built strong enough to handle it. Sean

| I ended up buying a AIR-COOLE MOTOR SPINDLE 4KW AND MATCHING INVERTER spindle off of ebay. I hook it up, but find it does not have much torque at all. I talk to tool manufacture (onsrud) and they said I should be able to run at 720 IPM with there tool and a 5hp spindle. However I can not even cut at 125 IPM before the spindle stalls. Has anyone ever had this problem with these Chinese spindles? |

| Sounds like you have your VFD set improperly.

| That is what I was thinking. I setup the VFD up as the buyer said, but it does not have the power. I don't know if there is any other setting I could make to the VFD to get more power. Can anyone confirm that a 5HP (4KW) spindle can cut 3/4" melamine at 400 IMP with a 3/8 compression bit? Has anyone have this problem with a weak Chinese spindle and been able to fix it? |

| What RPM are you spinning the spindle at?

| Base Frequency - Should match the F on your motor's faceplate Running Frequency - for max torque, this should also match your motor # of poles - also should match. If it doesn't, your motor will not run at the correct speed. Current limit - should be set at or below your spindles max current rating (I think I have mine set at 90% of max). My guess is that if you have a problem in your VFD setup, it's either this or possibly your base frequency.
