Tkubic 4'x4' rnp build

Started my design about 6 months ago, and I've made a bit of progress since then. I wouldn't consider it complete yet, but it is functioning.

Basic Stats:
  • 4' x 4' cutting area (49"x49" mdf table)
  • 4 stepper motors (2 on x) hobbycnc pro board using their power supply
  • rack and pinion x, y axis
  • single start 1/2-10 acme rod Z axis. (wish I would of gotteng 2-start)
  • mdf table double stacked then planed with machine
  • Aluminum T-tracks in table. Hartvilletools supplier. spaced 5.75" apart (I think) because I bought 9.

This is my original CAD model

Materials came in. 8020, cold rolled steel, aluminum bar stock, rack gear. Materials came from onlinemetals, McMaster, and 8020 ebay store.

Machined all my own bearing trucks, steel rails, rack clamps, etc...

Side view of the previous image.

My really crappy motor mount. It held together, but I was always afraid it would explode.

My remake of the motor mounts in aluminum using the router. I believe I took .032" cuts off per pass at something like 60 ipm.

router as it sits today.

I have been working on a redesign of the rack and pinion from cncrouterparts. I found I was frusterated by how much space that system took up. I hadn't planned for it properly in my intial design and when I went to put it on after building the router I found I couldn't reach the edges of my table. After working around that for a while I decided to redesign that system. I don't feel like revealing my design quite yet but here you can see how compact my design is. It is showing promise but currently I only have a prototype in place and need to test it a bit more.

Just because. Everybody has gotta do it when they make a cnc router .

Another one. Gcode was carveone's doing, paint was from Michael's, it is called sophisticated finishes, I believe this is the golden brass or something like that.

Currently I need a dust collection system in place. I have a shop vac with the Thien Cyclone Separator I built. Fantastic little tool. I need a system with a quick removal brush which also lets me view the cut in progress. I know there is a couple available out there, but I like to design and/or build my own. I have a bunch of links and have been doing tons of research, I just need to figure out how to apply something I like to my application.
