laser cut MDF??

I was Leary about trying this but my cnc's are tied up with paying jobs.
I am building a clone of Patrick Hood-Daniel's Black toe 2x4. and cut most of my Mdf on a laser using nitrogen as a shielding gas (with no fires!!yeah)
It only took 8 minutes to cut cut a 4x4 sheet worth of parts. the only downside is the edges are blackened and stink like hell. nothing a little sanding wont cure.
I have to say this hobby is getting addicting i am only 1/2 to 3/4 thru this one and i am already designing a 80/20 machine.....I have learned a ton on this site and look forward sharing my builds.

the solid model is just a rough design

interesting the thought of using a sheilding gas. really the only way to avoide heat/fire. Good idea..

Please can you supply details of the laser you have used. I am looking for exactly the same kind of capability for a blacktoe machine.

Why bother sanding off the carbonized MDF? Why not just give the edges a good soak with polyeurethane or epoxy. It might be a bit messy but it would seal them up a treat :-)

Buy me a Beer?

I too would love to use a laser to cut mdf. What power and type of laser did you use?

I think the Co2 laser cutting machine is much better, but should make attention, don't make the speed too slow, otherwise it will make the edge burn or turn to black. what is the cutting thickness of your MDF?

Most mdf purchased at large lumber retailers in the USA come in 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses.
