| Hi all, I am making my second CNC 1000x700 mm cutting area mainly to cut MDF 10 to 18 mm deep. At the moment I am designing the machine in 3D and I wonder how do you think it would be to make the Y axis from steel tubing or welding tube of 30x30x2 mm because I can't spend much money and it is the only thing I can find around here. Like this DIY CNC Router - Ultralajt`s World of Flying He made it out of aluminium but I think steel would be much stronger. the only thing is 30x30 tube I don't know if it is going to flex too much. What do you think? My router is not very big and not very heavy but I am worried about the preassure agains the material to cut. I started making it out of MDF but I am seeing the gantry is going to be too heavy for the motors I have as I was following this model more or less.... blackToe 2x4 v4.0 Is 30 mm square tube enough to handle the weight? Thanks! |

| I'd say go for it. I built a machine from 25mm welded square tubing and it performs great. Steel is strong, easy to join by welding and doesn't change size like wood does. Do you plan to weld? One comment on the link you had showing the aluminum frame.. the two horizontal beams are OK for that kind of a cutter but you will find that a normal router will flex in a direction around the beams. They would need to be spread further apart to achieve good stiffness. Keep in mind that there is a lot more to building a functioning machine beyond the frame. Good luck Dean |
