chinese spindle clamp concept

all the credit goes to a coleague of mine who described the idea to me.
the clamp is cheap to make, and eventhough it's untested yet, it looks and feel damn strong !
all you need is a piece of tubing (i had some stainless steel, 1mm thick) of 80 -85mm inner diameter.
you also need a few bits of aluminium and some flat steel.
you need to workout the thickness of the spacer first. this is calculated from the perimeter of the inner section of tube, minus the perimeter of the spindle, plus 2 to 4mm either side for "confort"
in my case, the pipe was 85mm, the spindle 80, making the difference plus the margin at about 20mm. divided by 2, that's 10mm either side.


in goes the spacer:


the flats are welded next (I took care of drilling them before hand)


and there you go:








the legs and base are then made from 20mm thick aluminium:




There you go.
simple, strong mount. took me 4 to 5 hours, It aint pretty yet, but with a bit of filing and a lick of paint, it will look great !

Guess I can apreciate the engenutity, Least you have a welder. Although makes me happy that I got my CNC bridgeport at auction when I did..

Perhaps the steel shell will make it even quieter..
