Ear Splitting

When I cut hardwood with my 1/4" bit and going with the grain, I get an ear splitting whine! Besides adding some cheese to the mix is there anything I can do about this?
One other thing, a while ago I noticed someone with an air deflector on their router. I was wondering if anyone has a dxf for one. I do not have a real good vacuum, it is good for short 5 to 10 minute jobs but anything longer is pushing it. A continuous duty air collection is a real good idea but until I invest in one, I can eliminate some of the trouble by deflecting some of my Porter Cables air output away from the cutting area.
Thanks Happy New Year

I have not cut anything but MDF so far but i will tell you that I changed my carbide bit out the other day for one of those cheap HF spiral bits and holy cr@p that thing is REALLY loud. I am going over to Lowes and buying another good bit tomorrow.

The bit I'm using is an Freud upcut sprial $23.00 CAN.
Only loud when cutting with the grain, hardly any noise when cutting across the grain.

Buy me a Beer?

1) Try a shorter bit.
2) try cutting faster
3) Use a bigger diameter bit.

1/4" bits can really scream when cutting hardwood. Using the proper chipload, which usually requires you to go faster, is probably the best thing.

What rpm and feedrate are you using?

I have it set to 30ipm@18k rpm.
Maybe I do a search for feeds and speeds again.
I have to do something the dog hates me now!

Try 125ipm @ 12,000 rpm.

Thanks Gerry, I will see if I can get my router going that fast.
Just wondering, what RPM would I need for 50ipm?

To keep the same chip load, 50/125*12000=4800 rpm.

Or you could try a single flute bit - that would let you double the rpm for the same chip load.

It is easier for me to turn the RPM of the PC down than increasing the IPM of the machine.
Thanks for the help everyone!

You can do that to a certain point, but at some point, the cut quality will start to suffer. Never tried routing at 4800 rpm, but I'm guessing it's too slow. And he probably can't slow it down that much anyway??

It'd be interesting to try slowing it down with your super-pid to see what it did to the cut quality. That can do 5k rpm, right?

Yep. I'll have to try it one day and see. I can set it at 10K and use the slider to bring it down to 5K while cutting.
