Removing Speed control from one router to another

I have an old Plunge Router that has speed control in it. I also have a new Trim router that I want to use on my cnc which doesn't have variable speed control. Would it be that hard to pull the speed control off the old router and put it into the new router?

if both are universal AC motors (has brushes) and both draw the same amount of current you should be able use the speed control out of one on the other.

A easier solution would be to buy a heavy duty AC light dimmer and wire that up to a socket that you plug your non speed controlled router into.

For universal AC motors the basic speed control is just a light dimmer circuit. The more advanced ones take spindle RPM as a feed back or are a brushless system (but these only show up on the really high end units)

If you want the speed to stay the same under any load you need a PID feedback system (like super-pid see the other fourm threads for more info on that). But if you just want gross speed control (you need to set it under load) then a dimmer should do ya.

You may be able to transfer the speed control but it's a fiddly job and might end up not working.

Harbour Freight sell a cheap drill speed controller that works with routers for about $39, but like Wireb says it won't keep the speed exact or give you much low speed power.

Or you can go for a good speed controller with RPM display and accurate speed control etc like the SuperPID.

Just see the SuperPID thread at CNCZone.. Using SuperPID, you can directly control the speed(RPM) with Mach3 and can ON/OFF the router thorough mach3...
