Is the Gecko G540 the best for a beginner? Or would this be better for a beginner? 4 Axis CNC Gecko G540 380 oz in Stepper Motor Kit - eBay (item 270571800913 end time Dec-25-10 20:40:25 PST) THanks |

That kit you linked to is the same one that's sold at CNCRouterparts. I'm sure Ahren would actually appreciate it if you bought it directly from his website, as he wouldn't have to pay as much in feebay fees. (And it's cheaper on his website, too) Notice that his kit is using the Gecko G540. I and most everyone else agree it's the best for a beginner, and can even be the best choice for a production machine. It really is the best bang for your buck that I've ever seen. And it's virtually unkillable. If you don't already have your motors and power supply, the kits that CNCRouterparts sells are a very good deal.

The Kit you show the link for contains the G540 (a 4 axis Stepper Controller).....so I am not sure I understand your question. You will need at least 3 steper motors, wires, and power supply. As noted Ahren sells all of these. You can also get great deals directly from Gecko for the G540 and their steppers.

I just built a router with Steppers, cables, and Gecko 540 purchased from CNCRouterParts.com. (bought other stuff from him too) The steppers have connectors attached with proper resisters installed so it was a simple matter of plugging everything in and turning it on. Worked just fine from day one! That what I (a newbie) need. YMMV. Don

One minor thing to be aware of with the kits from CNCRouterparts is that the resistor is supposed to go right up by the drive, not on the motor end of the cable. But so far, no one has seemed to have any problems. I got a motor from him to play around with (and use on my next build), and I'm very pleased with its performance.

You can see here how easy it is to wire it: Minimum wiring connections for Gecko G540 LINK Gecko has a general wiring diagram, but the link above shows how to connect that exact kit. Since I'm a noob to this, I wanted a kit that was pretty much set up and ready to go. Edit: Actually I got the 3 axis-kit, not the 4-axis kit in your link.
