First off I'm not trying to start a debate over ball screws vs Acme thread. I think everyone can agree that ball screws are more efficient then an Acme screws, but you pay a price for it. So I came across this sight that sells ball screws and if I was to go for a 3/8" dia I could just about justify the added cost. 3/8 X .125 Right Hand Recirculating Lead Screws & Nuts for Power Transmission - Roton Products, Inc. Now my question on a 24" screw say moving at 120ipm, is there going to be too much whipping going on? I've looked at ebay and it seems that I would have to adjust the router size to match available screw lengths or cut a screw down to fit the machine size I want to build. If I were to go Acme, I would definitely go with 1/2". Again, Thanks for taking the time in educating me in all the nuances of cnc router building. Rick |

| RicknBeachcrest, Why not use the 5/8 ball screw, it is a lot less money. 5/8 X .200 Right Hand Recirculating Lead Screws & Nuts for Power Transmission - Roton Products, Inc. Jeff...

| Wow. I didn't even look at them. I just saw the price of the 1/2" and thought that smaller would be cheaper, which it was, but nothing like the 5/8". Thanks Jeff. Unless someone can see a reason not to get the 5/8", I think I will be putting an order in shortly. Rick |

| Be Very Careful ordering from Roton. I ordered just a few screws and nuts Sunday night on their web site. I'd normally have ordered a lot more, but wanted to see how shipping went first. They placed a bank hold on the funds when the order was placed, then placed another hold on the order plus the shipping charges once they knew what shipping cost would be. So twice the cost of the order plus the shipping cost has been on hold at my bank for the whole week. I wrote to ask them about this this morning and never heard back from them. Their "sales@roton.com" email seems to be the only way to contact them except by phone. It may be a Very Bad idea to use a debit card with them. That could possibly freeze double the amount of an order at a bank and that could cause a snowball effect of payments for other things getting declined....also possibly causing other banking fees. I am Very disappointed as I'd hoped to buy more screws from them in the coming days. But having double the cost of the order frozen at the bank has made placing other material/supply orders impossible until this gets solved.....however that will happen.... ![]() i.e....place a $3-400 order and be damn sure you have twice that amount that can be in suspended state for awhile. Without causing any problems. |

Have you tried calling their number yet? |

| I didn't have time to call them, but it appears to have been straightened out today. Still the $$$ wasn't available for the week. IF... I had done my usual ordering of other materials, something may have been a problem. I'm not implying Roton isn't a good place to get the things we need, but someone being unaware of the double charging could bring them BIG banking problems. I'd like to get my stuff direct from a manufacturer and I'd like to figure out how --without this sort of surprise. I used to use the Paypal one-time use credit card plug-in, but they've canceled it. Where do you find one-time use cards now? I need one... |

I use Discover card or as a fall back I use Mastercard. I log onto the card's website and one of the options is to get a one time use number. It looks just like a regular credit card number, but can only be used once. One of the on-line retailers I bought something got hacked, and ever since I have only used one-time-use numbers for on line purchases. I canceled my card before any charges were racked up on it, but it was a pain. A little bit of a hassle to get a number for each on line purchase, but worth it in my opinion. Rick |
