spindle ?

I have been looking into a few different spindle options but would like some feedback as to what you all feel is the better option

#1 are the 3kw spindles you can buy off ebay.

#2 are the shurline spindle cartridges.

this machine will be mainly used for milling aluminum. So im looking for something heavy duty and capable of 10k rpms

Any thoughts on something a little more heavy duty than either of these options... I like the shurline spindles as I could run whatever motor combo I want but im unsure they are heavy duty enough.

Can't comment on the Chinese 3 kw spindles.

I do have experience with Sherline spindles (both with regular and their "high speed" pulleys).

While the regular speed spindle was just fine, the motor got very hot. The spindle became very hot at 10k rpm even when bearing pre-load was adjusted per Sherline instructions.

Have you considered the Taig ER-16 spindle with their 1/4 hp motor? I use that now instead of my Sherline. The Taig motor runs cooler, the belt changes are easy, and the spindle itself seems to tolerate 10k rpm much better than the Sherline spindle with "high speed pulleys".

The Taig cuts aluminum very well. Works ok on wood but the rpms are a little low for that.

No I have not looked into the Taig spindles however I will do so.

Do you happen to know what kind of power etc they can take. Im looking to run 3-6 hp through whatever spindle I use... Not sure if any of the shurline or taig spindles are acceptable for that.

The two motors that Taig supplies are 1/5 and 1/4 hp. I assume that a 3-6 hp moutor would be way too much for the spindle.

yeah get a taig or sherline but for the motor look at a bldc motor that is for sale at keling.com under milling machine spindle.

you can get a 1kw motor from them that should be plenty.

Well I would really like something more robust than the taig or shurline spindles. I think before I would run either of those I would just bu one of the 3 or 4kw spindles off ebay. They come complete with motor, collet, and spindle etc.

Any thoughts one something larger than the taig or shurline

You could use an X2 spindle, I'm pretty sure you can by the X2 spindle separately.

There are a lot of X2 threads in the metalworking machines section of the forum.

to go larger, it would have to be because your want a ton of torque. and therefore a larger diameter motor. those 3 kw VFD controlled watercooled spindle motors off of ebay are made to spin to 24000 rpm and can it is said cut a slow speed also. but they are fast cutters mainly.
it falls down to what you wish to cut.
is this going to cut mdf sheet all day or would you like to cut aluminium once in a while.

what will you cut?

the X2 are an other option. but they max out at 6000 rpm.
that is still fine as you can still match them to a new type brushlessDC motor and controller, from keling.

This rig will be for cutting aluminum 90% of the time... A guy in the metalworking section gave me a good idea. He bought a used spindle off a used haas mill for a few hundred bucks. was good to 20hp at 7500 rpms.

now thats overkill for me but if I could find something good for 10hp at 7500 it would be right up my alley
