Gilly's Router

Hi All,

Following is a building log of my wood router. I will keep this updated as I progress.

Big thanks to James & Shogun, for their help.

The steel frame is made from 50 x 50 x 4 and is approximately 2m x 1m.

The linear guides and rack are bolted to a 5" x 1/2 " x 2m steel strips which are glued to the frame and supported at each end.

I drilled a 3" x 1/2" x 2m steel strip and bolted it to the side of the 5" strip before glueing to keep it straight.

I used a laser level to setup the steel sides and linear guides to be level, and intalled the gantry to keep things parallel while the gule dried.

Here are some pics of the gantry.
It's made of 5083 aluminium plate 16mm thick.
I have tried to keep it as light as possible.

What's the advantage over the more commonly available (up here at least) 6061 ?

Yes, keep the pics coming, it's beautiful

Hi thanks for your kind words "5083 is the highest strength non-heat-treatable alloy in commercial use. It has good formability and weldability and retains excellent tensile strength in the weld zone by virtue of its as-rolled properties. It is used most often in structures requiring high weld efficiency and maximum weld strength. 5083 also has excellent resistance to corrosion."
The truth is we pay a lot more for 6061.
