I am considering building a CNC (3-axis) with a 4th motor to turn the object (either wood of aluminum). Does anyone know if a DIY machine using relatively inexpensive lead screws and steppers is accurate enough to make 1/4 inch screw threads on the aluminum? |

| I assume that you mean to mill threads parallel to the Z axis. Threads are a SOB, the backlash needs to be pretty darn good to make a decent fitting thread. One method would be to use the rotary 4th axis in conjunction with the Z axis but this mandates the thread be centered on the 4th axis. The Zaxis is less prone to the backlash issues due to gravity. |
