Machine is still in the planning stages.
For most of the time the spindle will be in a vertical position doing normal flat bed cutting. I have one process that mills a long strip, but needs to be profiled along its length with a variable height profile. Mounting and hold down with the router vertical is problematic. I don't see a problem with installing the spindle horizontally as far as the logistics of locking the Y axis or fitting a raised platform to to get clearance between the router body and the table.
I'm not sure how I should balance the mount. I assume that the center of the bit should be on the center line of the Z carriage so that the cutting forces are in the same orientation as they were with a vertical spindle. But horizontally I have the motor off to one side. Should I be concerned? Should I install an arm off the bit side with a mass to balance the motor?
Rail will either be THK LM series or supported 20mm shafting and ball bushings on both the Z and Y axis.
