![]() ![]() The problem of finding edges of non-conductive materials.... ![]() Here's one made from a scrap of drill rod and a skate bearing. It'll locate edges EX-tremely well and is easy to use.... Just find one edge. Zero the DRO... Find opposite edge and set the DRO axis to half. Move to dead center and drill.... ![]() This isn't my own idea, but I wasn't able to find very many examples of someone actually making one and trying it. I've been right at the doorstep of buying a $$$$ one for some time, but few of them work with materials other than metals. It was pretty easy to make on the lathe. It's only off by a very tiny bit, but that works to my advantage of being able to see the mark on the bearing 'skipping' easily. ![]() John |

| I'll have to try that one , it would be a good method to use with the high speed router , regular edge finders and high rpm's don't go well together

| I'm running it somewhat low....maybe 350 rpm. I might be concerned about the grease slinging out at too high of a speed. I know even Oilites will sling the oil out if I run them too fast in the lathe....(sometimes they're customized a tiny bit) But there's got to be a way.... ![]() ![]() John |

| I wouldn't worry much about the grease leaking but now that I've thought about it low rpm bearings at high rpms is purely dangerous , sort of like playing with a grenade I'll stick with the homemade probe

| Speaking of playing with a grenade... I run the reamers at a low speed and it's so slow and so many flutes that it's easy to brush a few flakes off with a finger without it seeming like a dumb thing to do. But it grabbed my finger the other day and if I hadn't had *just enough* clearance in the vise....I'd be much more sorry than I've been in a long while. I Always keep a long bamboo skewer close to the lathe and mill for when it gets tempting to knock a little trash out of the way. I won't touch another thing spinning in a mill again. It sure looked safe enough. It always had been. Not anymore! ![]() John |

| the key is to always have crazy glue close by for the larger gashes

I use crazy glue too. It mystifies a lot of people, but it works Great, and I'm back in business within minutes... ![]() Stuck my hand under a spinning 4" sawblade once..... Slash! ![]() John |
