I'm looking at ebay for some spindle motors. Narrowed it down to 4kw air cooled motors. There are only two. They look a bit different in shape, but the specs are the same. The VFD on the square one is only 1.5kw (on the label) Is one better than the other? http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-AIR-COOLE-MO...ht_9527wt_1137 http://cgi.ebay.com/4KW-AIR-COOLED-S...ht_8663wt_1032 |

| The VFD in the picture is not the one you'll get. The Chinese are notorious for using generic pictures. It would appear that the only difference is the outer case, and possible the cooling fan. You really don't know with the Chinese spindles without taking them apart and comparing them.

| I don't know how real are the pictures, but for the first one the connector is way too weak for 4 kW. That kind of connector is rated at 5A, and it is used over the limits - I know this seems to be just a detail, but it is just telling about the quality of the design. And 4 kW air cooled... it's a bit too much for the lack of heat sinking the displayed cases are showing. I would be very reluctant to buy any of them, but that's just me. All the best, Florin |

HereinCS they are very poor quality VFD's and honestly i wouldn't want one, i bought one with my WC spindle and after 3 attempt's I eventually got a working vfd but by then i'd already bought one local and would recommend you do the same. I bought an ABB 350s which is torque vecter vfd and it's one of the wiser decision's i've made, it absoluty blows the cheap vfd's away in both quality and ability's. I'm very very very pleased with the spindle thou and i work it quite hard cutting aluminium 95% of the time for hours on end and it handles it with ease with no sign's of any wear or scarey noise's. The 2.2KW WC version i have never even gets warm after hours of use and i only use a very simple submersible pump in a 5 gallon container and the water also only ever gets teppid and not even near warm or hot. My spindle is coming up 1yr old and if it blow up tomorrow i would still buy another the very next day, it's payed for it's self several times over. |

| He'll get one that looks like that, but it won't be a 1.5Kw VFD. Should have been more clear.

| Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'll just get the spindle motor then. I'm sure I can get the motor alone for around $450 or so. Meaning I'll have at least $300 for the VFD. How much is the ABB 350s and will it drive a 4kw motor? I'll email the seller for actual photos, hopefully. |

| Florins...your comment on cooling is interesting. I'm staying away from liquid cooling because it's one less mess that I'll have to deal with. I'm sure I'll kick the bucket over and spill it on some hot wire, cause a fire, etc. The square one is interesting because I'll just buy some aluminum fins and attach it there, or I can ask my machinist friend to make a full length spindle holder with fins to dissipate some of the heat. Think that'll work? |

| The spindle itself is inside the square casing. Adding a heatsink to the square casing probably would do very little to cool the spindle.
