Nema 23 277oz and gecko G251

Hello I built a CNC router with leanier shaft and ball screws. I am using Nema 23 277 oz motors and a Gecko G251 driver and a break out board. Could somebody tell me what the six wires are on the motor or how to hook the motor to the Gecko drivers.

thanks

Hi G. Welcome to the Zone!

You have a Unipolar motor, (6 wires) and a bipolar driver. You can either wire the motor in series, which will not move your axes very fast, or half coil, which will move faster.

I would recommend half coil wiring.

There is a good example of half-coil wiring HERE:

Thanks for your reply on the nema 23 277oz and the gecko g251 drivers.

I'm looking over the site you sent me. I'm not the best electrician. Could you tell me which is the center tap and end wires used, or how to read them to be used. I have a volt meter but I don't know how to really use it.

Thanks
Hopefully you have a multimeter. That has settings on it for measuring resistance. You can tell the resistance settings because they will be marked with the Greek letter Omega, which looks kind of like a horse shoe. You will also see numbers ending in K on the resistance portion. Set the meter to the lowest setting--probably 200. Grab any two wires and measure the resistance between them. Write down the wire colors and resistance reading. Some of the wires will not have a reading between them. Ignore These. Two pairs of wires will have higher readings than the others. These wires would be connected to wire the motor in series. These pairs of wires are the two phases of the motor. There will be another wire that will read a lower resistance between each of these pairs. That wire is the center tap. To wire the motor in half-coil, you will want to connect one of the lower reading pairs to the driver as A phase and one of the pairs from the other phase as the B phase.
