Hey, I'm starting to build a 2x4 finelineautomation cnc router and due to space constraints, everything in my garage shop is on casters. I'm wondering if it's possible to get casters on this machine and not run into issues when the machine is running. This thing has six legs which adds to the complexity... Anyone have success getting casters on a router and still getting it to cut accurately? BTW, I'm a newbie so go easy on the technical terms. |

| I've got casters under my machine...nice big 5" diameter ball bearing ones. Great for when I have to use my...err...workshop...for it's real purpose - holding vehicles! I don't expect machine accuracy to be affected by the presence of casters, because the position of your cutting tools relative to the cutting surface is all that matters. It's not like you'd be losing steps if the machine shifts in one direction or the other, further, I think having the entire machine able to move in reaction to the stepper movements would actually dampen fast accelerations and decelerations ever so slightly. Then again, if a machine is firmly planted to the ground, 100% of the force generated by the linear motion system goes into moving the gantry, rather than the weight of the entire machine. Either way, I've not noticed any negatives with my system being on wheels, and being able to tuck it out of the way when I need to is a huge plus. You can always get casters with brakes on them, too... |
