timing belt question

I'm currently designing my router table, a 4'x8' table for routing in wood only (i figure 80% MDF, 20% other hardwoods). My gantry design calls for dual timing belt drives on each side of the X axis, and single belt drive on the Y (linear rail/ballscrew for Z). The X and Y axis use BishopWisecarver DualVee guide wheels and tracks (tracks not shown in the rendering). In working out pricing for the belts, pulleys, idlers, etc, I'm finding the pulleys are fairly expensive, especially for 3/4" and wider belts.

My question is, what size belt is really needed for each axis? I figure the gantry will weight about 60lbs... Any suggestions? I dont want to buy 6 $25 pulleys if they're not needed....

Thanks,
Aegeon

A rendering of the gantry is attached. Please ignore the Z-axis, the design has changed significantly.

I wouldn't see a need to bigger than a L series or smaller than an XL series. I would use a Kevlar reinforced belt to lessen the effects of stretching.

Buy me a Beer?

The 4x8 belt drive routers I've seen all use at least 1" wide belts. GT or GT2 being the best choice. Check out www.sdp-si.com for a lot of good belt info.

I use a commercial 5'X16' machine. It has medium sized steppers (not sure of the actual frame size) with a 3:1 reduction to rack gears - they chose a 3/8" wide XL belt.

I'm talking about using the belt as the rack, your talking about from the stepper to the pinion, right?

Sir,

I have always been a fan of rack and pinion; you can see the machine I made in the preceeding Skate Wheel posting. My particular setup uses direct drive from the stepper to the rack thru a 2" circumference drive pinion (circular pitch rack) and having 10x microstepping giving a distance per step of .001". The machine runs smoothly form the microstepping. If one were to use the 33 frame steppers, you can get quite a bit of torque from them in direct drive, or you can gear them down for more torque.

Your design looks a lot like the Shop Bot!

Regards,
Jack C.
