Hi, My name is Jon, I'm from Kingston, Ontario. I have just graduated the Mechanical Engineering Tech Program at my college and past the Precession machining and tooling level one excemption for machinist apprenticeship that I'm currently pursuing.

I have been working on my machine in peices for the last 4 months. In the last month I have made physical progress. Thinking about a machine for a little less then a year.

So here are a couple photos of some progress on the electronics side I have made in last week. As well as a couple concept renderings.

So I have a issue, I finished all nessacary wiring and loaded emc2 on the computer. Now my power supply is entering one of two fault protections, I believe. It powers on, green light flashs then dims. The power supply is a Mean Well PS-1000-48 and is rated at 19amps at 41-56volts. I currently only have 1 of the gecko drives hooked up stepper motor. It might not be a fault protection at all but the lack of ability of my house wiring to provide the "inrush current" which im not sure of. The other possiblity is it has a sensing circuit for load sensing which i have not connected to anything which it might need but i believe its for when u connect more then one of these power supplies together.
I understand this stuff, just not as well as some of you out there possibly.

There should be something in the documentation that came with it that tells you what to do with the load sense terminal. Normally you connect it to the DC output terminal if you don't want to use remote sensing, or run a separate wire from it to the DC input terminal of the load equipment. It will compensate for any voltage drop in a long wiring run to the load equipment.

thanks for the help carveone. I was able to get it all working today. Heres a bad video done on my cellphone.

Very good. Those screens in your video look very familiar to me.

Well I have been reading and watching the forums daily. As well as working on different aspects of my machine. My goal has been to cut steel with my machine in the end to 0.001 of an inch. So I will post pictures of my progress tomorrow. I had to reconsider my original design mostly because of the ability to keep something rigid using a 1.5inch square tube over 5 feet. I have 98 percent the parts of my machine. I went to a thk linear rail and ballscrews over my original rail system from the original custom rollskate with gear rack system. To make I needed parts that cost more then all 3 of my ballscrews. So heres my render. Cut area is designed to 12by12by12

Well Hello there, My name is Jon

Hi there. Im kinda new to CNC stuffs but i am currently building my own machine.
My first thoughs when i looked at your renderings, and you say that you Will be able to cut steel with it, is that you will need to support your gantry alot to keep it from flexing and vibrations. Remember to think in squares when you design. And when it comes to cut steel, the heavyier the better.
Just my thoughts. Keep on working

So, this is a picture of my ballscrews and linear rails. Rails and 1 ballscrew is THK and have very nice action. The other 2 ballscrews are Warner. As well as the stainless cap screws for the rails. My design has designed arround these items. I didn't get much new cutting done because I had to return a mitre saw to Canadian Tire. Damn do I love CT, I never have any problems returning anything. So I just worked on organizing my garage a bit to make this process easier. So heres the picture

I agree with Lapin. Those THK pieces are the start of a great machine and a fixed bridge is the way to go but the current frame design isn't up to the task. When milling steel rigidity is everything,

Once I have completed building my original design, I have added a place for reinforcing the upright. I just subscribe to the simple stupid to start and then add stupid after. So I'm into cutting metal for it. I have created all my halfby1 steel bars got all of them with in a 0.001. Happy with that considering the machinary I am using. Got my alum flat for the zaxis upright and motor and bearing mounts. I'm planning on a collant flood system so, I also got the 18 gauge for the pan. My next step is to take the legs down to length and work on the zaxis. Some pics of the work as well as redid the video.

I like the "beat box" wffect of the steppers, would be cool to mix that in with some MIDI stepper music!

Well over last few days this is what I have done. That with working on how to use my cam software. This is the start of my z axis. I am happy the rigidity I was able to obtain so far with out tweaking.
